My Mother

Her arms were tight
round my broken heart
Her words soothed
every single part

She always knows
what needs to be said
Even as I
think I know instead

My Mother is strong
but not invincible
She's had her own pain
It was unbelievable

But through it all
she has her smile
her laugh, her word,
all the while

She may be sad
or lonely, or weary
She may be happy
or funny, or teary

Those are her thoughts
and hers alone
She would say
"Don't worry 'bout me"
over the phone

"Okay, Mom, I won't"
I'd say with conviction
While secretly praying
for God to take action

Today, I salute you
oh, Mother of mine
May every day of your life
continue to shine!!
